Robby

Robby

Line Manager

Joined November 2011

A self-taught developer with a Master's Degree in Japanese studies, Robby joined ISR Tokyo in 2012 as CloudGate's development manager. Currently, he is working at the Cebu office, managing the development team and mentoring junior developers.

His passion for building stuff from Lego sets to 8 bit drawing programs led him to his current career path. He finds excitement when he is designing or writing good software, especially if it ends up creating added value for the company.

Despite his managerial position, he never really thinks of his job as managing and/or mentoring. Rather, he thinks of it as a collaboration on the same product, with him knowing maybe an extra thing or two because of more years of experience.

He values clean and elegant code in the projects that he’s involved in, so, as much as possible, he tries to provide direct feedback about why he likes or dislikes a certain solution or coding style. It gives him a great sense of satisfaction when he sees other developers take some of his advice on board, and continue building on that.

“There’s no substitute for practice, so: read and write as much code as you can and expand your horizons. At the end of the day, as a software developer, you’ll spend most of your time trying to find elegant solutions for a myriad of problems. The more variety in your training, the more it will feel like you actually know what you’re doing, and the less it will feel like you’re trying to drive in a screw with a hammer.”

Javier

Javier

Group Leader

Joined January 2012

Javier first joined ISR Tokyo in January 2012 as a software engineer. He took a year long break from the corporate life to travel to the Philippines and found himself in the beautiful island of Cebu. As he befriended many talented programmers through hackathons and other meetup events, he saw the great potential among Filipino developers and proposed to create an office in the Queen City of the South.

He became one of the founding members of ISR Cebu and has played a big role in hiring top talent for ISR.

“Starting the office in Cebu has been an amazing journey, in large part because Filipinos are friendly, hardworking and eager to learn. With an initial team of only 4 developers, we were able to successfully deliver our first project: end-to-testing, which increased the quality of our product CloudGate and reduced the time needed for testing.”

He believes ISR Cebu will play a key role in ISR’s global success, not just in terms of development, but also in terms of sales and marketing.

Gregg Varona | Sr. Systems Analyst | Group Leader

Gregg

Group Leader

Joined April 2016

One of the first Filipino developers who joined ISR, Gregg started as a systems analyst along with three other colleagues. Their team contributed to ISR Cebu’s first milestone of completing the automation of the end-to-end testing of CloudGate.

Since then, he has moved up the ranks in the last 2 years and is now a group leader managing 13 members of the ISR Cebu Development & QA teams.

Besides coding, he now has to do project management, administrative tasks and overseeing QA practices and processes. Despite the added responsibilities, Gregg enjoys his position.

“There’s always a fun challenge to solve in the company. Being a group leader has given me access to effectively utilize not only my own potential but also to help bring out my teammates’ potentials to solve these challenges. Not only do I want to help ISR grow as a company, but I also want to help my colleagues grow in their careers and ultimately, as new positions open up, contribute to the community in Cebu.”

Jenisa

Front-end Developer

Joined November 2016

A self-starter who loves learning new skills and technology, Jenisa first entered the company hoping to be a freelance front-end developer. She ended up joining full-time because of the talent that surrounded her at ISR as well as the opportunity to learn about Angular2, a new front-end technology that the company is using.

Initially in charge of front-end development for CloudGate, she was eventually assigned to help out the marketing efforts in Japan. What started out as online video calls to assist with website implementations turned into a 2-month business trip, which ultimately turned into an official transfer to the headquarters in Tokyo.

“Having the chance to work in Japan for me is a challenge but an exciting opportunity to gain new experience both personally and professionally. I enjoy any task given as I find it an opportunity for me to grow. Regardless of its complexity or form, we can always find something new to learn and improve on.”
